These programs have grown out of suggestions by participants who expressed interest in learning specific skills. Each program includes skill building components through group discussions, theory review and hands on practice. Participants are encouraged to share their areas of expertise by mentoring and supporting one another.

Cooking Club
This popular program includes menu planning, safe food handling techniques, and an introduction to basic cooking skills. Members work as a team to plan, prepare and enjoy a nutritious meal. |

Introduction and Advanced Computers
Introduction to Computers is designed to meet the needs of the beginner. The program includes an orientation to basic computer terms and functions, as well as an introduction to various software applications such as Microsoft Word, Publisher and Excel.
Advanced Computers is for those with existing computer experience and focuses on using the Internet and e-mail. Participants learn how to set up e-mail accounts, access search engines and other advanced computer applications. |

Brainy Bugler Newsletter Production
The Brainy Bugler is a bi-monthly agency newsletter with a circulation of more than 600. Participants in this program are exposed to all aspects of newsletter production from initial researching, writing and editing articles, layout and design, setting and meeting print deadlines to the final packing and mail out. This program provides participants with the opportunity to work in a product driven, team environment. |

Gardening
This program runs year round, alternating between a community indoor greenhouse in the cooler months and a local outdoor garden plot during the summer months. |

Sailing
Offered in partnership with Queen's Quay Yachting, this program includes group sailing instruction as well as the opportunity to enjoy a sail around the harbour. All instructors have their CYA Advanced Cruising Standard, Toronto Harbour Licence and First Aid/CPR certification. |

Self Defense
Participants practice formal patterns and movements in order to attain belt levels. As part of this program, one learns how the concepts of respect, self-esteem and confidence are integral to this traditional martial art. |

This program provides participants with the opportunity to express their creative abilities through the design and production of hobby projects. Members research and plan both individual and group projects including review of material costs, project budget and level of difficulty. |

This program is taught by a drama instructor who specializes in working with individuals with special needs. Participants work on a variety of theatrical techniques including voice projection, expression and improvisation. This group has performed at a number of public events to rave reviews. |

Lead by a talented musician, this program provides the opportunity to express creativity and love for music in a variety of ways. Singing, song writing, and playing instruments allow participants to work on hand coordination, concentration, articulation, and breath control. |

Special Events Planning
As an agency, CHIRS offers a number of special events through the year. These have included the Annual Picnic, Spring Fling and Halloween Dances, Family Swim and Bowling parties. Program participants work on the following aspects of event planning: budget review, menu planning, decorations, promotions and advertising. This group is open to all CHIRS clients and family members. |

All Adult Day Service programs require registration. Please contact the CHIRS Intake Department to register. Participants accessing Adult Day Service programs need to be independent for all transportation and personal support requirements, as one to one assistance is not available. Participants who require additional support are welcome to bring a family member or attendant. Please note that programs may be added or changed in response to participant feedback.
